Coughing Up Blood (Hemoptysis): Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, & Treatments

Symptoms of hemoptysis

Hemoptysis, or coughing up blood, is not a medical condition. It is a symptom by itself and can be accompanied by other symptoms according to the diagnosis. Thus, if you want to know what other symptoms people experience along with hemoptysis, that depends on what condition they have in the first place.

For example:

Asthma

This is an inflammatory problem in which the airways in the lungs become swollen, causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Hemoptysis here is caused by the same inflammation that causes rhinitis, or inflammation of the nasal passages. Other asthma signs and symptoms include chest tightness, anxiety, and palpitations. If you’re coughing up blood as a part of asthma symptoms, it might be necessary to rule out an infection in your respiratory tract.
