Coughing Up Blood (Hemoptysis): Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, & Treatments

Bronchitis

This is probably one of the most common causes of hemoptysis. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air into and out of the lungs. You can sometimes have an upper respiratory tract infection that complicates causing bronchitis or pneumonia. As the disease progresses, the inflammation in your respiratory tract worsens, and the chance of bleeding and coughing up blood increases. Symptoms of bronchitis include hemoptysis, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Patients may also have high fever and malaise.
